Writers Resist is a nationwide collective of writers that formed shortly after the election in order to resist “that which attacks or seeks to undermine those most basic principles of freedom and justice for all.” On January 15, 2017, Writers Resist will stage readings across the United States and in Europe and Asia in order to express our “shared commitment to the spirit of compassion, equality, free speech, and the fundamental ideals of democracy.” There are 80 events planned (and counting), including one in Ithaca.
“Justice for All: A Writers Resist Reading,” will take place at 2:00pm at the First Unitarian Church and will feature ten local writers -- Dubian Ade, Michelle Courtney Berry, Sorayya Khan, Christine Kitano, Tish Pearlman, Bob Proehl, Dan Rosenberg, Raza Rumi, Saviana Stanescu, and Helena Maria Viramontes -- who will share the works of other writers that speak to the ideals of freedom and democracy. Hosted by Jaime Warburton. Michelle will close the event by singing (and encouraging the crowd to join in) Bob Marley's "Redemption Song."
All proceeds raised will go to Ithaca Welcomes Refugees.
